My Favourite Books For Self-Growth

What I love about being a Holistic Nutritionist, is it is not all about the nutrition part. Of course that is a HUGE part of it, but let me explain to you what it really is. It is about the body, mind, and spirit connection and getting to the root cause of ones health concern. Holistic, meaning “whole”. I work with many clients on mental health and how to guide them back to their true selves. Growing up with anxiety and shortly after experiencing the dark sides of depression, I really had to begin my soul searching journey. As a kid, and young teen I was very exposed to electronics and television (weren’t all of us?). I would stay up until 2:00 am on school nights watching T.V and playing with whatever electronic device I could get my hands on (Usually Gameboy). I hated reading and I don’t think I ever finished a book until the end of high school. Thank goodness for Spark Notes, am I right? You may have also caught on to my grammar. Currently working on that :).

I remember during my dark times, and my very fearful days, I was always suggested to read certain books. “Read this book it will help”, “You should totally read (insert self-help book here), it helped me so much”, “Have you ever tried reading instead of stimulating your mind with all that T.V”. Of course my response at the time was “I HATE READING, it is so boring”, and I would come up with every excuse in the book to avoid it. One day I finally came to terms with the fact that maybe reading will help me grow, and maybe one book will help me shift my entire mind. Sure enough, it did.

The very first self-growth book I picked up was The Secret, By Rhonda Byrne. I think that was the first time I really felt a connection with my inner self. I began to shift my thoughts and started focusing on my relationship with the universe. I started becoming obsessed with growing and improving my mind. I have always been very intuitive and felt that there was a bigger, and beautiful purpose in life, and I began to put in the work. I then received the book Light Is The New Black, by Rebecca Campbell for my birthday, and now I use it like my bible. I found so much of my truth in this book and started to realize that I was finally seeing the light that was always hidden behind my darkness and fears. If you have been in that place before, you know how exhausting and crippling it can be.

I always recommend books to my clients based on the experiences they have gone through, or their current situation and I always get incredible feedback from them. I really do believe picking up my first book has brought me more peace and self-growth. Searching your soul, putting in the work, and diving deep has definitely brought me more happiness. I no longer have a T.V in my room, in fact I don’t even watch T.V unless its HGTV, or the Food Network. Now every morning and before bed, I snuggle up to a good book, open up a page and begin the next chapter of my self-growth journey.

I wrote out a list of wonderful books that are great to guide you to your higher self. Are you ready to begin your journey? See the list below.

“Steadily, we are listening more to the intelligence of our hearts—and acting on that wisdom. And that's what spirituality is—an expression of Love.”

Danielle Laporte

“Trust that your wounds are exactly as the Universe planned. They were divinely placed in your life in the perfect order so that you could show up for them with love and remember the light within.”

Gabrielle Bernstein

“You are only free when you realize you belong no place—you belong every place—no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.”

Brené Brown

“You are here to remind people that it is OK to be whole. It is OK to shine your light. OK to be unapologetically you. In fact, it’s more than OK, it’s necessary in order to thrive. But you must go first.”

Rebecca Campbell
